Baalbeck: Like Elijah on Mount Carmel

Baalbeck: Like Elijah on Mount Carmel
 June 29, 2012

What a phenomenal way to end a busy week of ministry than a visit to Baalbeck, a city named after the false god Baal of the Beqaa Valley. We know of the story of Baal from 1 Kings, when Elijah faced and defeated the prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel. Our team was able to take a tour of the ancient ruins of this historic Phoenician city in Lebanon. We walked among the ruins of a place where a people group once walked that worshiped Baal and his false gods and prophets and where people sacrificed their very souls for the pits of a living hell and turned their backs against the one and only living God, sacrificing everything from animals to small children for the various gods they claimed to believe.

An excerpt from the story of Elijah and the prophets of Baal at Mount Carmel follows:

Now the famine was severe in Samaria, and Ahab had summoned Obadiah, his palace administrator. (Obadiah was a devout believer in the Lord. 4 While Jezebel was killing off the Lord’s prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied them with food and water.)~1 King 18:2-4

As Obadiah was walking along, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognized him, bowed down to the ground, and said, “Is it really you, my lord Elijah?”“Yes,” he replied. “Go tell your master, ‘Elijah is here.’”~ 1Kings 18:7-8

So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17 When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?”“I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you and your father’s family have. You have abandoned the Lord’s commands and have followed the Baals. 19 Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel. 21 Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.”But the people said nothing. Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the Lord’s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets. Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it.  Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord. The god who answers by fire —he is God.”Then all the people said, “What you say is good.”Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.” So they took the bull given them and prepared it.Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made. At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.” So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed. Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention. Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the Lord, which had been torn down. 31 Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.” With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs[a] of seed. 33 He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, “Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”“Do it again,” he said, and they did it again. “Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time. The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.  At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “Lord, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. 37 Answer me, Lord, answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.” Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench. When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The Lord—he is God! The Lord—he is God!” Then Elijah commanded them, “Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there. And Elijah said to Ahab, “Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.” So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees. “Go and look toward the sea,” he told his servant. And he went up and looked.

“There is nothing there,” he said.

Seven times Elijah said, “Go back.”

The seventh time the servant reported, “A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.”

So Elijah said, “Go and tell Ahab, ‘Hitch up your chariot and go down before the rain stops you.’”

Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain started falling and Ahab rode off to Jezreel. The power of the Lord came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel. ~ 1 Kings 18:16-46

On this day we walked a path like Elijah’s on Mount Carmel. We walked the ruins of Baalbek conquering every demonic spirit and false god in our path through prayers. To date the current city of Baalbek is home to the annual Baalbeck International Festival. The town is about 85 km (53 mi) northeast of Beirut and about 75 km (47 mi) north of Damascus. It has a population of approximately 72,000, mostly Shia Muslims - the Shi'ite movement of Hezbollah operates a hospital in the town.

God of Wonders: BCYM Orphan’s & Needy Children’s Camp

God of Wonders: BCYM Orphan’s & Needy Children’s Camp
July 26-28, 2012
The God of Wonders….what comes to mind when you think of our God as the God of Wonders? He’s Faithful…Merciful…and an awesome Creator of all things. That was the focus of this year’s BCYM Orphan’s and Needy Children’s Camp. Our team provided assistance in the following ministry areas: arts and crafts led by Connie, music and drama led by Angelique and Valhalla, sports led by Mirick and Valhalla, medical by Candice, and mental health by Sarai.  Other team roles included photography by Angelique and blogging by Candice.
Arts & Crafts camp day one

Jumping for Joy! Potato Sack races during sports

Camp Day One: God of Faithfulness. The memory verse for this lesson was 1 John 3:1, “See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.” The children through the worship programs, group devotionals, arts and crafts, and sports activities learned that God is faithful in the life of the believer. They learned that He has given us life and knowledge of Him, He provides for us every day, and that He lavishes us with His love. We helped the children understand God’s faithfulness can be found in the free gift of grace that He has given each of us through the death, burial, and resurrection of His son Jesus Christ. God has been faithful to His creation since the beginning of time. He has watched over us and allowed us in our own freewill to make wrong choices, but has always continued to make a way for the people He created to return to Him through His Son Jesus.
Camp Day Two: God of Mercy. The memory verse that the children studied on camp day two was from Matthew 18:33 which reads;shouldn’t you have had mercy on your fellow servant just as I had on you?’ The purpose of the lesson was to teach the children that the Lord has shown us mercy; so we need to show mercy to others, even when we sin against our Lord, He has mercy on us and will forgive us of our sins.
Also on Camp Day Two, the medical ministry was significantly busy. Our team nurse, Candice, had many interesting cases to address in between ministry lessons to include scrapes, head and facial injuries, a potential case of pink eye, and the containment and treatment of head lice. The most significant part of her day was that through her tireless efforts to keep the campers healthy as well as the leaders, which sustained a few stomach upset problems, the nurse also found herself ill and in need of medical attention by Camp Day Three.

Camp Day Three, lesson plan focused on the God of All Creation. The children were exposed to the Wonders of God’s creation, including the wonder of our physical being as one of God’s greatest creations. The lesson focused on scripture from Genesis 1:1-27 led by our team leader Sarai. A magnificent wonder of God’s creation familiar to the children are the cedars of Lebanon, which are mentioned many times throughout scripture. Psalm 104:16 and Psalm 92:12 teaches us why we should strive to grow like a cedar of Lebanon: ‘The trees of the Lord are well watered, the cedars of Lebanon that he planted…The righteous will flourish like a palm tree, and they will grow like a cedar of Lebanon.’

We Are Free to Worship!

We Are Free to Worship
June 24, 2012
A glorious welcome on our first full day in Beirut opened with worship service at a church in Lebanon. Christian worship in every language is the same when the Holy Spirit is present. Freedom in Christ means we are free to worship God in spirit and in truth. What a blessing to be in the midst of the enemy’s camp and freely worship together with our Arab brothers and sisters in Christ. What a joyous day it was. Hallelujah!

Please continue to pray for this church’s ministry as they are doing so many amazing things to reach the lost in this area. Some of their ministry activities include a college student ministry that provides exceptional copy and print services at below market prices for college students throughout the community. Another ministry is a powerful women’s ministry with a very special focus that includes opportunities for women that are victims of domestic abuse and cultural biases to learn skills to improve their sense of well-being and self-worth. Classes include language lessons, cooking classes, salon skin and hair care training, jewelry making, and even computer lessons. This amazing ministry is available throughout the week to minister to these women through activities that give them income producing skills for life and counseling that helps them learn more about the love of our Savior and how as women they are worth so much more to God! The primary needs of this ministry are first and foremost prayer, secondly people to help, and support.

Another welcoming and much needed surprise of our first full day in Lebanon was lunch and fellowship time with Gladys and her family after service. What a joyous afternoon of bonding and resting in the favor of God among our Christian friends.

After such a miraculous first day in Lebanon, our true work had only just begun. God had a special plan for our team in Lebanon, and it was not just the children’s camp, as we have not yet departed for camp at this point. The words of the following poem will explain in summation the sequence of events over our first two nights in our current living quarters and the glorious outcome:

Setting a Captive Free
Lost soul crying out for help in the darkness…
Seeking, searching, knowing there must be an answer within,
Watching from afar, fear he instills, while his spirit cries out from these hills.
Chained slave to sin, waiting for someone to show him how to win,
Seeking a redeemer, but unable to communicate…
This lost soul crying out for help in the darkness.
A desperate soul enclosed in a lifeless body, demon bound, ready to drag him into hell,
Seeking for someone to release him from his cell…..
~Candice

Twice two of our team members were visited while in their rooms by what most would consider a ‘peeping Tom’ or ‘voyeur.’ As a team we rallied together in prayer two sleepless nights in a row praying for God’s protection and that the enemy would be rendered powerless in his efforts to use this lost soul to continue to harass our teammates. At that point we all knew we had encamped on enemy territory and that there was a soul on this property that needed our witness and that God had orchestrated a miraculous plan for our presence there that was unfolding right before our very eyes. During the stranger visit on the second night of our stay at Beit Mary, our team leader, Sarai, met a young man of Muslim heritage who so graciously allowed her to use his cell phone to call our local missionary coordinator to inform her of what had happened. Unknown to any of us at this time, that something as simple as him allowing us to use his cell phone to call for help during our time of crisis was God’s way of opening the door to our witness to him and potential for future salvation. We confirmed that what the enemy intended for bad, to distract and instill fear in us, was what God used to lead us to this young man for the good of the kingdom.

Bearing Witness to the Savior!

Bearing Witness to the Savior
June 25, 2012

Its amazing how our Lord orchestrates such miraculous opportunities to share His word with someone. During our team devotional on our second day in Beirut at Beit Mary, the young man of Muslim descent, which allowed Sarai to use his phone the previous night, visited us. He was bringing the phone to Sarai because our local missionary leader was calling to check on us. As Sarai spoke to Gladys, the young man joined in on our team devotional time with questions about what we were discussing. The Holy Spirit was at work as the young man was open to learning about the Word of God and before he left, our team member, Angelique gave him a copy of her Bible as a gift.

After our devotion time and witnessing experience, we packed our belongings for the move to Notre Dame de Rosaire Monastery. This place will become our new living quarters for the remainder of the trip, when we are not at camp.

The remainder of our day involved camp leadership training at Arabic Baptist Theological Seminary (ABTS) and the Lebanese Society for Educational and Social Development (LSESD). This years’ camp theme is God of Wonders, with the sub-themes for each days’ devotional being God of Faithfulness, God of Mercy, and God of all Creation. We are preparing for an exciting camp experience.

As a special surprise after training, our beloved missionaries, Gladys and her husband Danny took us on a tour of downtown Beirut and the Marina for dinner.

Greetings from Beirut...We're Here! Praise God!

Greetings from Beirut…We’re here! Praise God

We serve an awesome God…each team member can testify of the trials and attacks experienced prior to our departure from Atlanta, GA. There were flight and personal delays for two team members coming in from other locations, which were complicated by the change in domestic and international terminals in our city.  Loss of vital hours in sleep prior to departure added to the situation. Most would assume doubt would set in and individual team members would fret and decide not to continue on, but that was not the case. In the end one car was parked at the airport.  Our team leader sent all of us through security and waited for the final team member.  She arrived with 12 minutes left to check in her suitcase.  Going through security turned out to be a breeze.  God is never late and he is still in the business of opening a path exactly when you need it!  We were sound and ready for the journey ahead to Beirut! We were all called for this journey and we all said ‘send me,’ but then no one would have ever imagined the cost of ‘hearing the voice of the Lord saying,“Whom shall I send? And who will go for us? ”and saying, “Here am I. Send me!”-Isaiah 6:8
We consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever we face trials of many kinds, because we know that the testing of our faith produces perseverance. We let perseverance finish its work so that we may be mature and complete, not lacking anything-James 1:2-4

God has an amazing plan ahead for us and this mission, and most importantly the children. The effectual and fervent prayer of the righteous has surely prevailed, and we continue to win, even in the midst of such intense warfare prior to our departure because the first half of the team is here, safe and sound, Praise the Lord! Many thanks go out to all of our supporters from all over the globe that are praying for us right at this very moment. Also, to those that were praying throughout the entire planning process and continue to pray throughout the remainder of this journey! We are truly blessed to have you all ‘on our team’

Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love him, (James1:12) and those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint (Isaiah 40:31). We are definitely soaring...

A phenomenal work is ahead of us as the real journey is ONLY just beginning. Everything went smoothly with the travel from Atlanta to Beirut with our first four team members. All connections were on time; security checks and passing through customs was a breeze! Currently the four of us are getting settled into our living quarters in Beirut as we patiently await the arrival of our last two team members coming in on a separate flight, which experienced minor delays with one of the connecting flights, but currently are on their way. We are resting in God’s mercy and protection as we await their arrival, and looking forward to an awesome first day in Beirut with worship service in the morning

Words of Encouragement & Thanks
